Your driving licence does not last forever. You must renew it before it expires. If you fail to renew on time, you risk fines and losing your legal entitlement to drive.
Renewals are handled by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. The process is simple if you act early.
When You Must Renew
You must renew your licence:
-
Every 10 years for a standard photocard
-
When you turn 70
-
Every 3 years after age 70
-
If your medical condition affects driving
-
If DVLA asks you to renew
Check the expiry date on section 4b of your photocard. Do not wait until the last minute.
Why Renewal Matters
Driving with an expired licence can result in:
-
A fine of up to £1,000
-
Insurance complications
-
Employer disciplinary action
-
Compliance concerns for professional drivers
If you drive HGVs or PSVs, your operator must verify your entitlement. An expired licence can stop you working immediately.
How to Renew Online
The fastest method is online.
You will need:
-
Your driving licence number
-
Your National Insurance number
-
Your passport number if you want to reuse your photo
Most online renewals cost £14.
If DVLA uses your existing photo, the process is quicker.
Renew at the Post Office
You can also renew at selected Post Office branches.
The fee is usually £21.50. The branch takes your new photo and sends the application electronically.
Renew by Post
You can complete a D1 form and send it by post.
Postal renewals cost £17 and take longer. Allow up to 3 weeks.
Medical Renewals
If you have a medical condition, DVLA may request:
-
Medical questionnaires
-
GP reports
-
Specialist assessments
Do not delay these forms. Missing deadlines can suspend your licence.
What Happens After Renewal
Your new photocard usually arrives within 5 working days for online applications.
Destroy the old licence once the new one arrives.
Check all details carefully, including your address and categories.
Best Practice for Professional Drivers
If you drive commercially:
-
Inform your Transport Manager before expiry
-
Provide a copy of the renewed licence
-
Keep proof of renewal
-
Schedule reminders at least 3 months before expiry
Operators are expected to monitor driver licence validity. Strong systems reduce enforcement risk.
Renew early. Keep your record accurate. Protect your right to drive and your job.
