When you reach 70, your driving licence does not renew automatically. You must apply to renew it. If you continue driving without renewing, you break the law.

The process is managed by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. Renewal at 70 is free. After that, you must renew every three years.

If you drive professionally or hold vocational entitlement, the process may involve extra medical checks.

Why Renewal at 70 Is Required

At age 70, DVLA reviews your fitness to drive. You must confirm that you meet the required medical standards.

This protects you and other road users. It also ensures your licence record remains valid and accurate.

Failing to renew can result in:

A fine of up to £1,000.
Invalid insurance.
Loss of legal entitlement to drive.

You must not drive if your licence has expired.

When to Apply

DVLA normally sends a renewal reminder around 90 days before your 70th birthday.

Do not wait until the last minute. Apply as soon as you receive the reminder.

If you do not receive a letter, you are still responsible for renewing on time.

How to Renew Online

The fastest way to renew is online.

You will need:

Your driving licence number.
Your National Insurance number.
Your passport number if you want to reuse your passport photo.

The online service guides you through a medical self declaration. You must confirm that your eyesight meets the required standard and that you declare any medical conditions.

Most online applications are processed quickly. Your new licence normally arrives within five working days.

Renew by Post

If you prefer paper forms, complete the D46P renewal form. DVLA usually sends this automatically before your 70th birthday.

If you do not receive the form, request one from DVLA.

Complete the medical declaration carefully. Send it to DVLA. There is no fee for standard renewal at 70.

Postal applications take longer. Allow up to three weeks.

Medical Conditions and Driving

If you have a medical condition such as diabetes, heart conditions, epilepsy, or vision issues, you must declare it.

DVLA may:

Request further medical information.
Contact your GP.
Issue a shorter term licence.
Restrict certain vehicle categories.

Never hide a medical condition. Failure to declare can result in fines and prosecution.

Vocational Drivers Over 70

If you hold HGV or PSV entitlement, stricter rules apply.

You must meet higher medical standards. This often includes a D4 medical examination completed by a doctor.

Vocational licences usually require renewal every year after age 65. If you continue driving large vehicles after 70, you must maintain regular medical certification.

Operators must check these documents carefully. Expired vocational entitlement can stop you working immediately.

What Happens After Renewal

Once approved, DVLA issues a new licence valid for three years.

Check the expiry date on your new card. Set a reminder for the next renewal.

Destroy your old licence once the new one arrives.

Stay Safe and Compliant

Renewing at 70 is straightforward if you act early.

Apply before your licence expires.
Declare medical conditions honestly.
Respond quickly to DVLA requests.
Keep copies of renewal confirmations.

If you drive commercially, inform your employer once your licence is renewed.

Your driving licence confirms your legal right to drive. Renewing on time protects your independence, your safety, and your legal standing.
