Specialist compliance support for HGV, PSV, school transport & restricted licence operators across the UK
Built for Restricted Operator Licence Holders

Restricted Doesn't Mean Less Risk

Restricted operator licence holders face the same DVSA enforcement, the same Traffic Commissioner powers, and the same Public Inquiry process as full Standard licence holders, but rarely have the in-house Transport Manager support that goes with it. The BFT Vault was built with you in mind.

📋

What Is a Restricted Operator Licence?

A Restricted Operator's Licence allows you to carry your own goods on UK roads using vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, for example, builders carrying their own materials, plant hire firms moving their own equipment, or businesses transporting their own stock between sites. You cannot carry goods for hire or reward (that requires a Standard licence).

Crucially, a Restricted licence does not require you to nominate a CPC-qualified Transport Manager. That sounds like a saving, until something goes wrong.

⚖️

The Compliance Obligations Are the Same

Despite the lighter administrative burden at application stage, restricted licence holders must meet the same operating obligations as Standard licence holders:

  • Maintain vehicles in roadworthy condition with documented PMIs at the declared inspection interval
  • Keep driver defect reports and brake test records
  • Hold and demonstrate financial standing (currently £8,000 for the first vehicle, £4,500 for each additional)
  • Operate from a declared, suitable operating centre
  • Comply with drivers' hours and tachograph rules where applicable
  • Notify the Traffic Commissioner of any changes within 28 days
⚠️

The Hidden Risk for Restricted Operators

Without a nominated Transport Manager, the legal responsibility for compliance falls directly on you, the licence holder. When DVSA visits or the Traffic Commissioner calls you to Public Inquiry, there is no Transport Manager to step forward. It is your name on the licence, your business at stake, and your evidence that must speak for itself.

That is why structured, audit-ready compliance evidence matters more for restricted operators, not less.

Why the BFT Vault Was Built for Operators Like You

01

No In-House Transport Manager Needed

The Vault gives you the structure a Transport Manager would provide, document classification against UK Transport Act requirements, expiry tracking, gap detection, and audit-ready presentation, without the cost of hiring one.

02

Right for You, Whatever Your Fleet Size

The right level of support is about what you need, not how many vehicles you run. Bronze includes up to four vehicles in the headline price, and suits owner-drivers, builders, plant hire firms and other businesses carrying their own goods.

03

Mobile-First for Operators on the Road

You're not sitting in an office all day. Scan documents with your phone, send them to the Vault, and they're auto-filed correctly. Your evidence travels with you, available 24/7 from any device.

04

You're the One on the Hook

When the call comes, restricted operators answer it themselves. The Vault gives you the same audit-ready evidence presentation that large operators rely on, so when DVSA arrives, you open your phone and show them everything, in order, timestamped, and demonstrable.
